The natural world offers gifts of beauty
every day for whoever will notice. Especially in this season of transition, each
small change in the outer landscape invites me to bear witness. When I pay attention,
I am immersed in nature’s moment; then the moment fades. The changes seem
simple, small, and at times barely perceptible. But when I remember each tiny
detail, I realize that these wonders of the natural world have added up to a
colorful tapestry - enriching my life over and over again. In this first week of autumn, here are just a few of the ever-changing delights that I have enjoyed:
A shooting star in the first blackness of the
night
Our neighborhood coyote pack in full chorus three
nights ago, replete with screams, howls, cries and yelps
A spider eating his grasshopper dinner several
inches outside my south-facing window
A three AM awe-inspiring windstorm that
knocked out power, enticed me to stargaze instead of dream, and reminded my aging
dog of her friskiness
Hot sunshine
Low night temperatures in the mid-40s (F.)
A rain deluge for nearly 24 hours
Increasing numbers of branches bearing orange
leaves
An understated rainbow in the early morning
dawn
Branches and leaves beginning to cover the ground
Still-green trees now bearing the dark olive
greens of early autumn (the green’s last hurrah!)
The double sky the other morning: dark gray rain clouds in the north sky;
fluffy white pillows against royal blue sky in the south
Big dipper clear nights
Blustery wind and continual weather shifts
