How does the land help us express ourselves?
…through quiet stillness as our eyes roam the beauty or devastation or
mundaneness of landscape around us
…as we take in nature’s tangles and bounty
…with each respiration, feeling the offering of life-sustaining air on
the inhaled scent of a spring bloom, or as we sigh out the tensions of the day
…by holding us and showing us our rootedness in all things
…through the tacit teaching that mimics our nature so that we begin,
animal-by-plant-by-rock-by-wind, to see human nature simply as Nature
…by finding ourselves, all of a sudden in our consciousness but for all
time in reality, unwinding the threads of messy “disconnection” from “other”
When we
sit on the land,
abide there for a while,
allow into ourselves all that surrounds us,
notice the gifts and instructions inherent in place,
listen for guidance,
engage the nonhuman world with all our luscious sensory abilities, and
humbly and proudly declare ourselves “one-with”
then we accept the present, the gift, that is re-membering.
Connection guides us toward expression.
And so we write, love, whisper, hold, move, breathe, create out of that
place…literally, the place of landscape, of earth’s dusty deserts and burgeoning
oceans.
