Giving Thanks
Day, 2015:
awakening to beachfront view, ocean
surging
Just a few of us
braved the frigid air of the six a.m. beach.
other visitors – a few with dogs running
free beside them – paying homage to the ocean
How could we
not? Roaring foam waves with teal underbelly called us out there.
frigid air and hats, scarves,
double-thick jackets zipped up to chins with fingers clenching fabric tighter
still into body
My dog romped
and roamed – sniffing rocks, sand hills, the waterline, air.
gulls standing a few feet from the ground
floor balcony pecking each other for bread crumbs
And all of us
humans just quietly greeted one another; none of us offered the typical “Happy
Thanksgiving” but, instead, simple ‘Hellos’ and ‘Good Mornings’.
For we knew we
had it good. Great – in fact! Collectively,
we tacitly agreed: we had no need to wish happiness or holiday tidings upon one
another when it was so utterly clear we were living gratefulness, joyousness, as
we embraced the holiness of a dawn bright and clear.
