Welcome!

Welcome! This is a place to share how we celebrate & deepen our relationship to Nature. Here you will find stories, images, & ideas about wilderness, human nature, & soulfulness. Drawing from the experiences of everyday living, the topics on this blog include: forays into the natural world, the writing life, community service, meditation, creativity, grief & loss, inspiration, & whatever else emerges from these. I invite you on this exploration of the wild within & outside of us: the inner/outer landscape.

One Hundred Pieces for the 50-Day Project

For fifty days in a row (from late January to mid-March 2026), I quietly did a private project during which I created one hundred small stitchings. (This was my take on the 100-Day Project which I have done for many years prior to this.)

This medium is a bit of an accomplishment for me as I have - for my entire life - carried a great distaste for sewing; I'm not skilled at it, nor do I like threading needles, knotting thread, sewing for functional purposes, or poking my fingers with the needle.

But what I learned through this project is that I really enjoy using fabric and fiber to intuitively place a few materials together to create a whole. Many of these pieces seem to resemble landscapes; this is not surprising given my professional and personal life focus on "the inner/outer landscape."

Before crafting each piece, I would choose the fabrics, knot the fiber, and thread the needle. Then - and most importantly - I paused for a meditation to become grounded, relaxed, and to let go of any desired outcome. I also kept myself from getting too precious with each piece by: never undoing stitches, allowing unplanned knots or tangles to remain on the front side, and surrendering to the inherent goodness of whatever seemed to appear as a piece came to fruition.

Each little square is an active meditation composed of fabric, handmade paper, yarn, thread, ribbon, and fiber waste.

Here are the hundred swatches I created.
